WFS Strengthens Its Presence at Heathrow with New Cargo Warehouse
Worldwide Flight Services (WFS), a prominent player in the air cargo industry now a part of SATS, has signed a significant 20-year lease for a new cargo warehouse at London Heathrow Airport. This strategic move reflects the company’s commitment to enhancing its capacity and positioning itself as a leader in cargo handling services.
An Expanding Infrastructure for Growing Needs
Set to be operational by 2027, the new warehouse spans 11,000 square meters and will feature an advanced four-level, 220-position powered cargo handling system, designed to manage an impressive annual throughput of over 160,000 tonnes. This expansion comes as Heathrow continues to experience robust cargo growth, with figures reporting a 10% increase in cargo volume year-over-year for 2024.
Supporting UK and International Trade
Heathrow is not only a critical hub for passenger traffic but also the largest UK port by value, moving 1.58 million tonnes of cargo valued at £215.6 billion in 2024 alone. With WFS currently operating across eight facilities handling over 350,000 tonnes annually for 12 airlines, this new lease underscores the ongoing importance of Heathrow in both UK and international trade and logistics.
Job Creation and Economic Impact
The introduction of this new cargo facility is projected to create up to 100 new jobs upon opening. Chris Beale, Managing Director UK at WFS, emphasized the need for substantive infrastructure to handle increasing cargo volumes, stating, “Heathrow is literally flying from a cargo perspective.” The facility will specifically cater to special cargo handling for pharmaceuticals, perishables, and other sensitive materials, reinforcing WFS's commitment to quality and precision in logistics.
A Look Ahead: The Future of Cargo Handling
With the growing emphasis on efficient cargo solutions, logistics managers and airlines are keenly interested in WFS’s expansion plans. This development not only signifies WFS's commitment to meeting future demands of the aviation logistics market but also sets a path for enhanced supply chain solutions impacting business travelers and trade routes globally.
