Transforming Cargo Handling at Milan Malpensa Airport
Worldwide Flight Services (WFS) has unleashed a wave of efficiency at the Milan Malpensa Cargo Terminal by cutting average truck processing times significantly through an innovative SMS-based warehouse door assignment system. The airport, positioned as Italy’s largest airfreight hub, processes around 28,000 truck visits annually, managing about 65% of the country’s air cargo volumes. Recent enhancements, including redesigned parking bays and improved loading and unloading systems, have collectively expedited operations for import and export cargo.
The SMS system, designed specifically for this terminal, provides drivers with clearer and more timely instructions for warehouse door assignments. As a result, the average truck service time has plummeted to an impressive 48 minutes, with 45% of trucks now processed within an astounding 30 minutes, and 75% within one hour. This represents a substantial improvement from previous metrics, where inefficiencies often frustrated logistics managers and hindered cargo flow. With only 10% of operations exceeding peak performance targets, these advancements demonstrably enhance customer satisfaction.
Digital Solutions for Enhanced Logistics Management
The introduction of CargoKiosk technology has further bolstered efficiency in processing trucks and drivers, streamlining documentation handling. Not only does this improve vehicle productivity, but it also saves invaluable time for drivers, thereby making logistics operations much smoother. Luigi Pellino, the operations director at WFS, emphasizes that this innovation enhances throughput, delivering consistent and timely services that are essential in today’s fast-paced logistics environment.
Looking ahead, WFS is committed to continuous improvement. In early 2026, investments were made to introduce a dedicated dock coordination position to ensure seamless vehicle flow. The airport authority, SEA, is collaborating with WFS in ongoing initiatives to reorganize the acceptance process at dock level to further raise efficiency levels.
A Bright Future for Milan’s Air Cargo Operations
The ripple effects of these improvements resonate beyond the airport terminal, affecting airlines, logistics managers, and business travelers alike. As cargo operations evolve, it’s clear that embracing digital solutions not only modernizes logistics management but redefines customer expectations in the aviation sector. In an age where speed is paramount, the strides made by WFS at Milan Malpensa set a compelling precedent for other airports and logistics centers worldwide.
